Perkongsian Pengalaman Temuduga Asasi TESL UiTM Edisi 2017
Assalamua'laikum and a good day to everyone.
For this second entry of mine, I would like to share my experience on the interview for Foundation in TESL UiTM 2017.
1st Part: Online Application Process
This program is offered to SPM leavers which can be applied through Unit Pengurusan Universiti (UPU) every year around March until April. However, it requires an interview to get the course.
Before choosing TESL as your first, second, third and fourth option in UPU, you need to check the minimum requirement especially concerning English. I put it as my first option so I was called for the interview. It was a few days before I knew about it. To check if you were called for interview, you have to refer to respective public universities' websites. In this case, I need to check at UiTM website.
For my batch, only two of us were called.
2nd Part: Preparation for Interview
Again, preparation is the key to success.
I quickly printed out the letter and instructions etc. Then, I photocopied some documents and co-curricular certificates to be verified. Any government officers of Grade 41 will be sufficient to verify your photocopies.
Here, I encountered my first problem. How to arrange the documents in the file?
The first part was easy because the arrangement was stated in the letter which included identity card, birth certificate, SPM result slip etc.The hard part was to arrange the certificates. My friend and I were baffled about this and received various opinions from our friends about it. However, I did some research on the Internet and concluded:
1) Academics (Third language eg. Arabic, French Delf / School Exam Result Certificate)
2) Leadership (Position at School eg. Prefect, Naqibah / Leadership Camp)
3) Certificates (Competition / Program / Volunteer / Quiz )
We arranged it from the latest to earliest. For example, from 2016 to 2015.
The other preparations were similar to what I mentioned in my first entry, so do check it out!
Perkongsian Pengalaman Temuduga Penajaan Program JPA ke Jepun, Korea, Perancis dan Jerman Edisi 2017
However, do not forget to bring along your stationeries because there would be a writing test! That's right, youheard read me. 2 mechanical pencils, a rubber, and 2 pen. That was what I brought.
3rd Part: Before Interview
Again, this interview was held at UiTM Samarahan Campus I so I departed around 6 in the morning. I decided to go a bit late because it was Saturday and I went with my friend who also had an interview on the same day but for Diploma in Sains Sukan. Please make sure you arrive at the place 30-45 minutes because you might get lost like I did.
I was quite early but other applicants arrived not long after that. They were quite quiet and looked nervous and intimidated. On the other hand, I was not nervous and looking forward to writing essay instead. God knows how much I love to write especially factual and argumentative.
There are two parts - first is writing test and second is interview.
I did some last minute revision on past year questions for the writing test yeay procrastination. As a result, I knew what level of difficulty I would be facing but I was thankful it was not as hard as ICAS questions. The writing test had two parts: objectives (comprehension) and essay for one hour total. First thing you need to do is to set how long would you spend for each part.
The article was about Digital Divide. Google it. To be honest, the article was quite heavy for me to digest and answer in 15 minutes. There were statistics and unfamiliar terms. The objective was the part that I was least confident about.
The topic for our essay was The Benefits of Studying Locally. At first, I thought the scope was too wide so I tried to narrow it down to public and private universities in Malaysia. I got a few solid points as the essay was related to past year essay topics. Here is the problem to people who love to write - you should write an essay based on topic given approximately 250 words. I wrote 300, after I cancelled a few phrases and sentences. I included official statements, statistics and sayings.
Let us move on to the next part - interview.
After an hour of mind torture, we were assigned to a few panels. I was Panel 3 and number 14. My panel started late and I did not know why but I waited patiently because patience is virtue. I made a few friends. We shared our preparation and prepping ourselves with each other before our turn.
Before I knew it, my name was called.
Give the interview panel a greeting, your file and photocopies to them. Do not sit unless you were asked.
[Update: 4/6/2018]
Hello everyone! I'm terribly sorry for all the late replies. To be honest, I didn't open up my blog that often and I was very occupied with studies lately. So, congratulations for those who passed the interview and got the offer. Good job for those who didn't, you've tried and you did your best.

If English is not your forté, try sharing how you constantly trying to improve it on a daily basis like watch movies, read books or having a mentor. The interview committees will see your efforts.

Here's another tip: before you enter the room, visualise yourself as the best speaker in the world and you're about to give the best speech anyone would have heard. It's like wiring your brain. Psst it helps me a lot.

Before I knew it, my name was called.
Give the interview panel a greeting, your file and photocopies to them. Do not sit unless you were asked.
- Introduce yourself.
My name is (full name). I am 18 years old. I am from (hometown). Before this, I was a student at (school name). My favourite pastime is to read.
#I really kept it simple because I did not want to be seen bragging off. Remember, your answer determines your next question.
- I see. Who is your favourite author?
Well, my favourite author is Dr Khairul Hafidz. Yes, he is a medical doctor but at the same time, he writes books too. I like his books with his team that is DIAgnosis book series. I even followed them on Twitter. They really like to share knowledge and information about health with the public. For example, Dr Khairul shared his tips to lose weight the right way and his progress every week which inspired a lot of people to follow.
#The interview panel did not have further question about this. I assumed because they actually did not know who he is. It's just my assumption. To be frank, I was preparing for what is my favourite book question and my answer would be Pena dan Picagari which was written by Dr Khairul. It's a good read.
- Well then, do you have any favourite movie?
Yes, I do. I like to watch Harry Potter. I watched all of them a few times already since primary school.
- How about the books? Which one do you prefer: movies or books?
I have read them in both English and Malay version. I borrowed the books from public library. I would say I prefer the books because it has more details. I could imagine a lot of amazing things more than the movies could show.
- Alright. Can you tell us any current issue?
Well, I've heard about the murder of Kim Jong Name. It happened at Klia2. There were more details I mentioned but I couldn't remember. Actually, I was very impressed at how this turned out, that our government and leaders solved this in a very short time - 28 days if I'm not mistaken. Because, you know, they take a wrong step, it would cause a war. Our diplomatic ties would be affected negatively.
#You should know this is a most compulsory question. It depends on your luck. Sometimes, the panel could ask specifically like "Can you tell us any current educational issues?" Begin your answer with a topic and include details then move on with your opinion. Read my answer again.
- 1st panelist"Are you active in co-curricular?" 2nd panelist, "Yes, very." and glanced at my certificates on the table.
Yes, I do. In fact, the achievement that I liked the most was when I participated in Johor. ...
#This is where you get to exaggerate. Show off. Use every advantage you get. Mention your achievement. I could not tell mine as I would be seen as exaggerating here haha.
- Congratulations. So, you are from a science school, right? Was it very rigid?
To be honest, it is rigid and the schedule are packed but it is a common thing for fully residential school. But our school is different. The teachers are very dedicated and our school really focus on academic excellence but at the same time active in co-curricular.
- I heard about it. Your school was awarded High Performing School. Is it true?
Yes, it is this year actually and I am very proud of it.
- Do you take Arabic?
Yes, I do as my third language. But actually, fourth language. I learned Mandarin during my primary school.
#Starting from this question, I had an interesting conversation with the panelist. There were a lot of questions in between that I could not remember but I took that hint as an interest from them.
- Can you speak in Mandarin then?
Yes but the basics only like greetings and simple sentences. I really did not like Mandarin that much but I managed to pass.
- Which school did you learn it?
SK (A) Datuk Haji Abdul Kadir Hassan. It's a religious school. We learned four languages - Bahasa Melayu, English, Arabic and Mandarin. *explains more that I could not remember*
- How about Arabic?
Well, I've been learning Arabic since kindergarten. During high school, we took third language and I chose Arabic. There were other languages which are Japanese and French. But I took Arabic since I had the basics. But, the Arabic I learned is not the same as those at religious schools. They learned High Arabic language. It was more intense and deeper. We learned Communication for Arabic Language so that we can speak Arabic in our daily life. The same thing goes to what I learned about Mandarin. I learned Communication for Mandarin Language during primary school.
- So, what language do you use at home?
Sarawak dialect, English and Arabic. (They were surprised at my third answer so I quickly explained why). Both of my parents studied at religious schools and took Arabic. Plus, my mother teaches Islamic Education so she actually priorities languages especially Arabic. My siblings studies at religious schools too so yeah, that's why.
- You learned all these languages so mind telling us which language are you most comfortable?
Honestly, English. I found myself think naturally in English. I speak in English a lot with my friends and on social media. I did not know why but I think I express my thoughts and feelings easier in English.
- Hmm I guess that was our last question. Do you have anything to ask about?
Well, I was thinking if you can tell me what aspects I should improve so that I can do better for my next interview?
- Wow that's a tough question.
I heard other applicants asked the same question the whole day - the when will I know result thing. I don't want to ask that question because I already know the answer. It was around second or third week of May.
- How did you know about it?
Well, I knew it from UPU page on facebook and twitter. They always update us.
- Good, that means you do your research. Well, first thing first, we like your confidence. You elaborate things that you know what you are talking about. We are impressed by your co-curricular records and the fact that you are multilingual. Being multilingual is a bonus to this kind of program, a language program. So, we hope you keep it up and maybe we'll see you soon.
Oh, alright. Thank you.
#At the moment, I couldn't hold back my smile because of the compliment. But at the same time, I thought my question was not actually get the answer.
After the interview, take your file and say thank you and have a nice day. As soon as I stepped out of the room, I was swarmed by other applicants. I only managed to give a few tips and left the building. I waited for my friend to finish his and while doing that, I wrote a brief reflection on a piece of paper. It was a draft for this entry.
------------------------------------
My answers in this entry are improvised as close as to the actual answer due to not so strong memory.
-----------------------------------
In a nutshell, I hope this entry provides help as many as it could to aid you on your interview. Drop your comment and question below and I'll try to answer asap. I wish all the best to those who will be having their interview next time.
Wallahua'lam.

salam , i recently got my spm results and alhamdulilah i got an A- for english . I'm thinking to apply tesl foundation but I'm not a multilingual person plus i only participate a lot in sports for my co-curricular records . After i read abt your experience during the interview , my self-confidence went extremely down . My question is am i able to pass the interview ? btw I'm truly amazed with your achievements!
ReplyDeleteHi. I'm a fellow reader of this blog. From my experience during an interview (bsc in architecture) i find that they are choosing a candidate that are able to excel during the interview instead of referring so much on results (totally not disregarding the results). i didnt take lukisan kejuruteraan or seni visual but ive been accepted into the course. good luck!
DeleteSalam and hi.
DeleteI have an interview this saturday, 28/4/18, in diploma in eng professional communication but i am not as active as you are in co curricular but i am more active in leadership but didn't have much certs as u have and do u think i will pass the interview? I am not confident about my achievements in school but just like u said, god knows how much i love to write, yeah same with me.
Wassalam. Sorry for the very late reply as I was very occupied. Before anything, congratulations for your SPM results! Being a multilingual is not one of the terms for TESL. It's just a bonus. The important thing is your confidence and will to go down this pathway. Unfortunately, I am unable to answer your question because it's up to you mostly and other variables such as the interview committees and the questions asked. The most important thing is focus on your strength. Best wishes!
DeleteHello. Im Noreen Hajira and im a Spm leavers for this year. Im thinking too to apply foundation in tesl but im not very good in speaking English. I really scared to take that interview in case i got it. So, i want to know...in case im not really good at speaking english and im just good in bahasa melayu....can i pass the interview as nicely and how to improve my english ? Because im not multilingual.
ReplyDeleteHi. Sorry for the very late reply. First of all, congratulations for your SPM. Well, there's always room for improvement. Don't be scared for interviews! They are opportunities for you to shine. If you know you're weak in English, try to talk about how are you improving them in your daily life. It shows your effort towards the language. Best wishes!
DeleteChill la sis. I think that they just want to see your confidence in speaking english. No need to be frightened during the IV session bcs it would make you more nervous and the panels could see it on your face. So goodluck for the IV 😉. Hope to see you if we are destined in UITM dungun
ReplyDeleteAssalam sis patenggg. Did u bring along your resumé?
ReplyDeleteWassalam sis. Sorry for the very late reply! In fact, I did but I didn't think it matters much to interview committees, just my guts. But, you are welcomed to bring it along just in case. Put it as the first document in your files. Resume is one of the opportunities to give a good first impression to the committees besides your self-presentation. Best wishes!
DeleteHi assalamualaikum. I just want ask one question and hope you response it, how they notify us if I get to the interview?
ReplyDeleteyou can check it on uitm website
DeleteAround what months or time usually they will post the result of TESL interview? p/s just curious, somebody pls answer me. thank you
DeleteHuh,I'm a bit nervous since I've got the tawaran for the interview.
ReplyDeleteMay I know where we can get the past years questions and the current issue? Since we're in the middle of PRU14,I wanted to know if there any educational issues because the news keep on focusing on the PRU

DeleteHai there! I've got the offer to attend for the interview this Saturday too!! Omg it such a great thing to meet another applicants!! Well, if u r free, don't bother to mailing me at yuukichan977@gmail.com. we can share some tips n knowledge before the session!^^
DeleteHaha unfortunately My interview is on Sunday and no,I don't have the past years questions.
Delete.I've got the offer to attend the interview this saturday too and I'm not that confident since I'm not rlly active at school. btw,I'll be attending the interview at uitm samarahan
DeleteI'll be going to uitm samarahan for tesl also tmorrow hehehe
DeleteHello! Sorry for the very late reply. There's actually no compilation of past year questions. Past candidates usually shared it in their blog posts hence, I searched and analysed them. As for the current issues, read news (high quality ones), listened to talks and get updated with the government's initiatives. Educational issues are actually frequently discussed so they can be found easily on Google. Best wishes!
DeleteDo help me how to improve my self-confidence😭 It is always be the biggest fear for me to face interview just because of my self-confidence problems . I couldn't imagine how can I face the interview panel, i might loose my words😥 My interview will be in this Sunday omg!
ReplyDeleteomg this sunday? same with me!
Deletesameee! my interview is in the morning, hby?
DeleteHonestly all you have to do is believe in yourself. Practice talking about something youre passionte about. See how you lose yourself expanding on every single point you say? Recreate that. Forget about messing up, just keep on going. Or even better, talk to other candidates! If you're on 2pm, just call out my name and I'll help you
Deleteonevest@outlook.com
DeleteHello there. Sorry for the very late reply. Self confidence used to be one of the biggest problems I had when I was in primary school. The first thing that triggered me to be more confident was seeing the confidence my friends have. They are so firm with their opinions, energetic and looked so bold. It motivated me to voice out more. So, be around confident people. If you hardly find any, you can always watch TED talks on youtube. They help boost my confidence especially when I'm preparing for speech and presentation. Secondly, practise. Talk to families, friends or even mirrors. Thirdly, find someone who can aid you in the process like a mentor or a teacher. One more tip, before anything that requires you to speak, visualise yourself as the best speaker in the world. Best wishes!
Deletehi i have my english professional communication (epc) interview this saturday, and im quite nervous because i rarely ever speak english in my 18 years worth of life , the last time i speak fluent english was for my oral test , i only used bahasa at home so idk if i should just cry or just disappear into the dark of nothingness where i dont have to deal with real life . Help me i suck, i can write in english but speaking? scratch that i want to jump
ReplyDeleteHello. Sorry for the very late reply. Don't be scared! English fluency is not what matters the most, it's English proficiency. Writing in English is a great start. Improving your speaking can start with doing the basic things. Use daily life conversations. Don't use complex jargons. You still have a lot of room for improvement and doing great things but to reach those, you need to take the first step. Best wishes!
Deletemacam mana dengan pakaian...what should I wear on that day...I am malay..should I wear baju kurung
ReplyDeleteOf course you should
Deletehello ms pateng. first of all, i am so veryy thankfulll that u shared ur experienced of being interviewed. By reading ur answers to the interviewers' question I gain a lot information, thank you for that. But still, im cracking rn, cause well i dont think i can speak english that well since when i talk, i will accidently add some malay words in it and this is one of a reason im scared of being interview. not just that im scared of writing. well, unlike u, u r good in writing factual and argumentative and me, the opposite. I prefer writing stories ehe well my imaginary is stronger i guess. ugh! i just wish that i dont get mess up when writing essay. Anyway, THANK YOU once again for sharing ur experience. It reallyyy do help me to prepare!
ReplyDeleteHello. Sorry for the very late reply. That's great to know! I hope you found them useful. Well, that's a sign that you need more practice! Writing stories is good and it's better if you learn how to write the factual essays if you really want to take up TESL because you're gonna see more technical parts of English. One tip for this kind of essay, plan out your structure. Introduction, main points and conclusions. Then, add explanations and some examples. This way, you would be more organised. Best wishes!
DeleteI was wondering if i have to make a copy of my co-curricular certificate? During the interview, do i hand them the copy or original? I have an interview in uitm dungun for asasi tesl this 28 april. It would be really helpful if u can answer this. Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteIts what I'm going to do im going to print all i have from form 1 to 5. Penolong ketua kelas also I photostate. See you on sunday.hopefully We'll meet and can have last minute discussions haha. Contac me on onevest@outlook.com if you want
Deletehey i also have an interview for tesl foundation at uitm dungun tomorrow!
DeleteHello. Sorry for the very late reply. Yes, you are required to do so. Don't forget to arrange them nicely. Best wishes!
DeleteThanks for the tips! Hopefully we all can break the tension on sunday by talking.
ReplyDeleteI lived in Sabah and my interview is on Saturday. I've no one to share my anxiousness with so here I am! lol Anyway, I'm not that active in co-curricular activities. I only participated in some competitions in school but that's it. I've no certificate for those. And the fact that we also have writing test is shocking. I thought we would only be interviewed..... sigh okay then. I'm just afraid that I'll be speechless when the panels ask me questions lol and I'm only talking in english on social media so ..... This is going to be hard. But I'll just be positive and do my best. Good luck to all interviewees.
ReplyDeleteHey there! I also attend the interview on that day at UITM Sabah, perhaps we've might seen each other too on that day haha. But gladly, the interview wasn't that hard. The interviewers were quite friendly too. I'm wishing all the best for us Sabahan candidates, hope we will pass the interview with flying colour!😊👋
DeleteHello. Sorry for the very late reply. Co-curricular participation is extra. The way you present yourself during the interview is the crucial part. Yes, the writing test is a component of the interview as TESL emphasises on both writing and speaking skills. Best wishes!

ReplyDeleteHello. I'm sorry to hear that. Know that you've done your best and you'll do better next time. Be more well prepared for any upcoming interview. Best wishes!
DeleteHi assalam. Im not a spm leaver. But i will sit spm on this year. And ive planned to choose Tesl for my next step after spm. Do i need to score A for english? I love english but im not confident enough to get A for this subject even english is my favorite subject.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if I barely participate for any co-curricular activities as I barely go to school honestly because of the mental issues I have, but I mean I plan on taking tesl as my first choice, do you think I'd be able to even get myself an interview? I mean, I don't think I have anything to brag really. It succckkks.
ReplyDeleteActually I'm still waiting for my SPM result ... And honestly i want to further my studies in TESL... But i dont actually master in writing essay, so can I go through past year questions on CW or DW or maybe SPMRSM questions? Can I? And,i want to know more about TESL, i already search it on the internet but i need someone to explain more to me, thank you for all of your information... It's really beneficial... 😇
ReplyDeleteDuring the interview, did you entered the room in a group or only you with the interviewees?
ReplyDeletetq for sharing your interviews, it somehow helped me to be more prepared but my anxiousness kept me distracted whether i can talk casually and confidently in front of the interviewers or not ..i scared if i would stuttered bcause it'n ll make me so nervous and couldnt continue to talk .. i think its because im an introvert ,so can you share any tips to help me boost my self esteem and be more courage
ReplyDeleteAssalamualaikum. I want to ask something. I'm a spm leaver and i applied for uitm tesl as my first choice. But after 6 days (after i got my spm result), as they said they somehow processed the upu and only showed the courses I qualify. But I didn't manage to get the uitm tesl one 🤦♂️ From what I researched, I passed the qualifications needed (I got an A+ in eng) but why didn't I pass? I'm sorta frustrated right now 😣
ReplyDeleteHello there! On this Sunday, I will be having an interview for Asasi TESL. I am quite nervous about this as I always stuttered when I speak English. As I was reading this blog, I knew that I am doomed. I don't read books very often. Any other things that I should say to the interviewers? Should I memorize anything about education?
ReplyDeleteMe too😭I don't read book too!😣
